The Church of Santa Maria Assunta at Misma

Cenate Sopra

The only way to get to this little church is on foot. You just need to follow the red and white markings provided by the Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club) on path number 607, or one of the many other routes that climb up the slopes of this mountain. Making the journey to see this enchanting sacred building, which was constructed around the year 1,000 A.D., also gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the nature of the Val Cavallina, combining beautiful objects of religious art with unexpected, panoramic views of the lake.

Originally there was a painting by Giovanni Battista Moroni, the great Bergamasque portraitist of the 16th century, lauded in art galleries all over the world, in this little gem of Romanesque architecture. This altarpiece has however been transferred to the parish church and in its stead we find a work by Enea Salmeggia, a painter who crossed artistic paths with Caravaggio in Milan in the 16th century.

The architecture of the little church is very simple: next to a little bell tower a single rectangular space makes up the interior of the building. On the outside there is a portico constructed on the lateral side and not the principal one, which offers a place for contemplating both things spiritual and the panoramic view that opens up over the entire valley.

If you are struck by the calm beauty of this place nestled in the countryside and its almost unreal silence, then spending the night up here in the hills is an experience made for you: next to the little church, which is located between the Val Seriana and the Val Cavallina, there is a little hostel where you can stay the night and that you can use as a base for exploring the various paths that wind up Mount Misma and its environs.
