“Rough in name, pleasant in appearance… with a dreamy lake in a green basin”. This is how Countess Winifred Terni de’ Gregory Taylor described Spinone al Lago.
The village is located above the Tonale state road SS42 that runs alongside the lake, on which the shops and tourist facilities are located.
Going up towards the historical centre, surrounded by greenery, you will find the splendid 13th-century church of San Pietro in Vincoli. Nothing remains in the village of the ancient Suardi castle, dismantled in the 15th century in compliance with the Venetian decree ordering the demolition of numerous fortifications in the valley. The noble family from Bergamo renovated an ancient building to create their residence, which is still partly recognisable even though it has been considerably altered. It is said that Saint Charles (San Carlo) Borromeo stayed overnight in this aristocratic mansion in 1575 on his return from one of his pastoral visits to the Seriana Valley.
Today, the economy of Spinone al Lago is based on tourism and the San Carlo springs. On the subject of springs, a cold sulphurous mineral spring has been known and commercially exploited in the Tuf valley for many years, starting in 1900, initially with just a simple kiosk, then with a small hotel-spa, and today with a water bottling plant.
If you are thirsty, therefore, you can utilise the kiosk that the municipality has installed to guarantee free access to the spring.
