CURIOSITIES
“Suffice it to say that the Buca del Corno also offers its own small contribution to the history of prehistoric times: burnt embers, a sign of primitive cooking activities; carved bones, and even a fragment of a flint knife and a crude piece of earthenware, together with a blackish, rich loam soil, which could truly be equated to the waste products of that truly primitive habitation”. The words by Abbot Antonio Stoppani in 1875 offer a portrait of the ancient and fascinating Entratico cave as he described it to his young nephews.

One of the cave’s inhabitants is an extremely rare beetle, Allegrettia pavani, a unique species studied by scholars in Italy and Germany, which shares this dark and damp environment with numerous other insects. It is not easy to see it, as it is not very sociable, but during a visit to the Buca del Corno you will learn the secrets of this ancient cave dating back to the Jurassic era, where numerous fossils have also been found.

The cavities of Buca del Corno also include the Sala dell’Altare (Hall of the Altar), which during the Iron Age was probably used as a burial place, considering the finds and remains unearthed, which are now on display at the Museo Archeologico di Bergamo (Bergamo Archaeological Museum). It is also significant for its speleological value: in fact, its structure is perfect as an illustration of the karstic phenomenon, and the cave represents a perfect element for understanding what goes on beneath the earth’s surface.

Today, around Buca del Corno, a six thousand-square-metre park is ideal for spending a day outdoors, after venturing into the depths of the mountain. Dedicated to the Abbot himself, the Stoppani Park can be reached by following CAI Trail n° 629, which starts from Trescore Balneario.

On the official Buca del Corno website, you can explore the cave in 3D before discovering its unique atmosphere: its history, speleological and landscape features are illustrated in a series of panels that are part of a guided tour inside and outside the cave. In addition, a detailed model of the cave structure can be found in the Sala Civica (Civic Hall) at the Entratico Town Council building.
