Known until 1927 as “Mologno”, the town of Casazza has distant origins. In fact, the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, Cavellas, were recently discovered there.
Casazza is located in the northern part of the Val Cavallina valley.
Recently, the town was the scene of an extremely important archaeological discovery, that of the ancient Roman “Vicus” (urban settlement) Cavellas. The discovery of burials here dating back to Ancient Roman times has made it possible to establish the existence of an important road linking the village to the Val Camonica valley.
The archaeological site of Cavellas, which has recently been turned into a museum, offers an exceptional opportunity to visit one of the largest Roman rural settlements in the region. Documents dating back to the 9th century also confirm the existence of Cavellas, which had the entire Val Cavallina valley under its jurisdiction.
In more recent times, however, Casazza was known as Mologno, a name that designated a settlement that developed around the year 1000 in a hilly area, from which the present town emerged. The name Casazza did not appear until 1927, after the unification of the municipalities of Mologno and Molini di Colognola, the current hamlet located on the hill on the other side of the valley.
Amongst the many important buildings in the municipality of Casazza, it is worth mentioning Palazzo Bettoni, documented for having hosted Giuseppe Garibaldi. The building now houses the Cavallina Valley historical and environmental museum, which collects, catalogues and studies local history, environment and inhabitants, promoting conservation and scientific research into various materials that are part of local traditions.
The town has many associations that annually promote and enhance the local area by organising cultural events, sports activities, fairs and festivals.
One of Casazza’s outstanding achievements is the “I Piccoli Musici” (Young Musicians) school, whose polyphonic children’s choir has won national and international acclaim as a result of its many important collaborations and its significant results in choral competitions. The choir is a cultural ambassador for the European Choral Association.
