Monasterolo del Castello

Set on the banks of Lake Endine, Monasterolo del Castello is one of the most popular and evocative locations in the area, and it offers a pleasant setting with many opportunities offered by the lake itself, a true jewel surrounded by the mountains.

An ideal place for a holiday of relaxation and recreation, Monasterolo offers everyone, both local residents and visitors in search of a period of rest and tranquillity, a pleasant setting with a wealth of activities that can be enjoyed on and around the lake (fishing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, hiking). Motor boats are not allowed on the lake, and the environment is still unspoilt.

The Monasterolo area includes several springs that add extra complexity to the already extensive hydrothermal facilities of Val Cavallina. The most important springs are located in the hamlet named Pom (in the Legner area): the Smeralda spring has sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium waters; the Gemma and Ferrobatteri springs offer medium-mineral bicarbonate-alkaline-earth waters; the Adamantina spring provides water with a lower mineral content but with more hydrogen sulphide.

In Monasterolo del Castello there are three important historical and artistic sites. The Castle, of medieval origin, has a garden that is considered one of the most beautiful in northern Italy; the Church of Santissimo Salvatore has many Baroque art masterpieces; and the Stations of the Cross, in the churchyard, feature the valuable mosaics designed by Trento Longaretti.

The name of the village refers to an ancient monastery, the remains of which were visible until the 17th century in the area of the present-day church. The unique and evocative “enclosed” churchyard is accessed through a portal on which there is a mosaic depicting Christ’s entry into Jerusalem. As you go down towards the church, there are 14 shrines with the Stations of the Cross. To end the visit, it is well worth going through a second portal which takes you out of the churchyard and towards the lake.
